22-Jul-2010 Wurrook Superfine Prime has been announced a national finalist in ABC's delicious magazine's 2010 Produce Awards.

The Rokewood merion producer has been nominated for it's meat and gourmet sausage product range, using fine-grained Australian merino meat.

It is the first award nomination for Wurrook, which was shortlisted by a panel of leading chef's around the nation, before being presented to the national judges in Sydney.

The chefs included Alla Wolf Tasker, Neil Perry and Maggie Beer.

Wurrook producers Paul and Kylie Walton diversified into meat five years ago with  their mutton product.

Mr Walton is a third generation merino producer, who was mainly involved in woolgrowing.

Since expanding their business into Wurrook Superfine Prime, their products ventured onto the retail market 18 months ago.

Mrs Walton said consumers had given positive feedback, saying the meat has a sweeter flavour than lamb, with slightly more depth.

Mrs Walton said it was rewarding to be nominated as a finalist in the major award after a lot of hard work.

Their product is maintained from the paddock to the plate, where it is sold at upmarket restaurants and outlets in Melbourne, Geelong and Ballarat.

"We're still only a new business and we're focused on what we're trying to do," Mrs Walton said.

"Victoria has so many fantastic producers out there."

The awards cover 12 categories including from the paddock, from the dairy, best farmers' market and best new product. 

Each year, they acknowledge those who are committed to quality and consistency in what they grow and create.
